Kyoto Cafe - Maeda Coffee Honten (Main Shop) Karasuma

The first cafe that I visited in Kyoto was... Maeda Coffee Honten. Before I went to the first day of new job orientation, I stopped by at Maeda Coffee Main Shop at around 7.25am to have breakfast. They open very early, and I really love that part of the shop!

236 Hashibenkei-cho, Takoyakushi-dori, Karasuma-nishi-iru, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto
Opens from 7:00 - 19:00

I first knew about this cafe from one of NHK World’s program, Core Kyoto about Cafe Culture in Kyoto. Long time before I actually came here! In short, this cafe has loyal customers who come every morning, and the staff are all very aware of this and they know the customers' likes, dislikes, preferences, etc etc. For example, even before the customer comes, they would put X newspaper on the table, then once the customer arrives, they would immediately serve them this coffee and this food. Isn't that amazing?! It's a relationship that is so... cool... Definitely something to learn for a hospitality person like me!

The front part (the first dining area) is a smoking area, so if you want the air to be clear from smoke, please go to the back side. Even though the non-smoking area doesn’t look as good, I think it’s better so that you can enjoy the smell of the coffee or your food more.

Unfortunately, I didn’t know that I was sitting at the smoking are (the waiter kind of told me, but I didn’t really understand and I asked if I could sit nearer to the entrance, which was the smoking area). The front part of the dining area is smoking area, and non-smoking area is further back.

I ordered a toast set, where one beverage of your choice is already included in the price. I chose Cafe Latte.

The toast had a huge serving of salad next to it, and the butter-spread toast was sooooooooo fluffy! Even though the middle part was fluffy, the side was crispy. I really enjoyed my meal.

The taste of the coffee was rather different from the ones I had in Australia. I think there’s more acidic taste to the coffee here. But overall, it was a nice coffee perfect for the cold morning!

Oh, also they sell some cakes and other things! You can immediately see the displays once you enter the shop. They have some interesting displays at the front.

Percentage of coming back? 78%.

*Note: percentage of coming back is not rating. It doesn't mean that it's a bad place, it's just my personal opinion whether I would go all the way back. I may be going back again if I don't have any more places on my list to visit.

Maybe I’d come back to try another dish. I shouldn’t have eaten matcha pancake at home before going out! Because I wanted to order something else and not toast set. LOL. I heard the omelet there is great.
